My Year Away. Again.

First, I went on Sabbatical. Now, I'm beginning My Year Away again as I start my first year of Retirement!

About Me

photo[2]

I am a professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of South Carolina. I’m a former administrator who re-entered the world of “regular academia” two years ago and couldn’t be happier.

As a professor, I research media effects. At the moment, I’m working on a number of projects including how e-cigarette companies market their products via Twitter.  I teach Account Planning to undergraduate students.  And currently, I”m teaching doctoral students how to become professors.

If I’m not at school, I hope I’m on the water rowing, in the kitchen cooking, the the choir loft singing, in the garden watering, or curled up in my chair reading.

  1. I like the changes you have made to your blog. I hope your year away will give you renewed energy and make you grow to new heights.

Columbia is home to two of our children and USC is where two other of our children graduated. Matthew Johnson, the son for whom I made the quilt (https://helpmeet39.wordpress.com/inside-out/ ) was a business major and recently honored at the Darla Moore School of Business. Jon Macon, our son-in-law, was a Medical School student who graduated with honors.

USC must be doing something right.

  2. Thanks, Beth! It’s a small world, isn’t it? Congrats to your son! The new business school is pretty impressive, isn’t it?

  4. Found your site via several synchronisms. I’m your age and have achalasia, on sabbatical and considering a “real” vacation, just to see achalasia symptoms go away.

I like your blog and glad I found it!

    • Hope you’re managing your achalasia well. Did you have surgery??? Thanks for reading my blog!

      • I am still resisting having the surgery! I wonder how it has turned out for you… I read about other people’s results and hold out hope that I can find cause(s) and solutions. Yours is the second account I’ve run across of a relaxing vacation or break resulting in no “A” symptoms. Also reading about auto-immunity being a cause.
I’ve been a software developer, but really wanting to find another work before retirement. Perhaps that would help stress… Also now working with an acupuncturist and a functional medicine practitioner.
